Enemy Territory: Quake Wars [PC] – 88%
If you like the Total War games, you cannot miss this game. Its improvements make the game far more streamlined and deep to play. If you haven’t played a Total War game, you need to take the chance and pick it up. If you don’t like Total War games, you’ll want to pass. While it is the new king of Total War, it isn’t a step in a different direction, either.
Viva Piñata [Xbox 360] – Review – 89%
Viva Piñata is aimed for kids, and they aren’t trying to hide it. What is hidden on its cute and cuddly surface is a deep, interesting game that can be very strategic and open ended. The vibrant visual style, rich sounds, and variety of gameplay all add up to a fantastic game. This is definitely Rare’s best release on any Microsoft platform, and it is a wonderful game to play.
Star Trek: Encounters [PS2] – Review – 53%
Mainly it suffers from being too bland and inconsistent, and while it has some good ideas it doesn’t quite deliver on all aspects. If you’ve got a bit of patience and enjoy the source Star Trek material, though, for $20 this game isn’t too bad.
Eragon [PS2] – Review – 43%
The game has some decent ideas that just need to be fleshed out better to work. It’s a pity, because some of them could be really fun if they were done right. Combat could be an interesting combination of melee combos, ranged sharpshooting, and magical intervention.
Xiaolin Showdown [Xbox] – Review – 39%
The action is dull, the graphics are average, the sound is average, and it goes on. In fact, the entire game falls between “inadequate” to “why do you hate me so?” Okay, so I’m being a bit harsh. Some of the ideas are nice, and the combat could be fun if there was a little more variety. Sadly, most of the ideas are stuck inside a boring game.
NFL Street 3 [PS2] – Review – 86%
With its stylish visuals, some rocking sounds, and a solid control scheme to all compliment the frenzied gameplay, you should enjoy the core of the game. If you’re up for some backyard football, this game offers a solid formula and plenty of options to keep on playing the game.
Call of Duty 3 [PS2] – Review – 82%
… if you have Call of Duty 3 for another console there is no reason to get this one. Nor is there any reason to get it if you want something different from the traditional Call of Duty formula. But if you are looking for an excellent WWII FPS game on the Playstation 2, put this is at the top of your list.
Bully [PS2] – Review - 90%
… the entire premise is almost cartoonish in presentation. Things are a little wacky and over the top, but it works fine and the game is better because of it. With a compelling story, unique approach, and strong gameplay you can’t go wrong with Bully.
Battlefield 2142 [PC] – Review - 85%
Many of the nagging issues with Battlefield 2 have been fixed or upgraded, like the major improves to the server browser and menus. It isn’t perfect, though, as you still run across some latency issues, bugs, and even an occasional crash. But overall, it’s a large step over Battlefield 2 despite being on the same engine with certain similarities.
The Sims 2 Pets [PS2] – Review - 65%
This could make a good gift idea for someone you know who cannot play it on the PC for any reason. It’s a great gift for all ages. Despite some nagging controls, interface problems, and graphical issues, The Sims 2 Pets offers up the classic formula of the franchise with some neat additions.
El Matador [PC] – Review - 67%
… it isn’t for everyone. If you’re into single-player FPS titles and enjoyed the Max Payne style but were looking for a little more action, then this is a great pick. El Matador has its downsides, but it can be a fun, but bumpy, ride
Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales [PC] – Review – 61%
If you’re looking for a fairly open-ended gameplay experience, with good rewards and a lot of customizations, this game could be right for you. However, the gameplay is very shallow, you run into a plethora of bugs and/or crashes, and you become frustrated a lot of the time. That said, if you’re able to ride out the rough seas, there is treasure to be had, even if it’s just a little.
